Research

Our R&D turns into the models and software our clients use, and we share the results at international conferences and in industry journals.

How we do research

We invest a relevant part of our budget in R&D, to create new products and to solve the technical problems we meet in client projects. Research works side by side with engineering: prototypes follow the same practices and run on the same stack as our products, so the ones that work become production software with little extra effort.

Many of our studies are written together with clients and partners such as Eni, Enel Green Power, Shelf Drilling and Kinetic Pressure Control, and with universities. In 2018 the Italian Government admitted kwantis to its register of Innovative SMEs, in recognition of its R&D commitment.

Research areas

  1. AI for drilling operations

Generative AI that drafts the time log of daily drilling reports from rig data, machine learning that flags low-quality logging data, and automated analysis of tests such as leak-off tests.

  2. Drilling performance and data

Combining sensor data, daily reports and well plans to measure performance, find invisible lost time and plan better wells, offshore and in geothermal projects.

  3. Risk and reliability modelling

Probabilistic models for projects and wells, from integrated risk management and the Riskturn methodology to blowout risk and well integrity in CO2 storage.

  4. Energy transition

Monitoring and cutting emissions in drilling operations, optimising rig fuel consumption, and making CO2 storage and geothermal drilling safer and cheaper.
