For Eni, kwantis studied the risk of a floating Dynamic Positioning (DP) rig drifting off position, covering every aspect: technical, environmental, human and organizational.
The challenge
The possible drift-off of a floating DP rig is a critical risk issue, especially during deepwater drilling operations, and Eni needed a complete risk study of it.
Our approach
After an in-depth information search, kwantis built a fault tree model for a typical semi-submersible DP3 rig. It integrates existing statistical information on:
- DP sub-system reliability: thrusters, transmission, sensors and more;
- Environmental conditions: wind, currents, heave and more;
- Possible human errors: vigilance, decisions and actions.
The outcome
kwantis then integrated this reliability model into e-wise, the well blowout probability model also developed by kwantis. This combines the drift-off risk with each possible drilling and completion operation.
