Total had managed its upstream projects with a risk management process for many years, but most risk information stayed within each project. kwantis developed a project risk management database to consolidate it for future projects.
- Risks analyzed and organized in the initial dataset
- 1500
- Projects covered by the initial dataset
- 8
The challenge
Total has wide experience in developing upstream facilities. However, most of the risk-related information remained confined to each project and hardly reached future ones.
Our approach
- Structure: kwantis defined the structure of the risk database, based on the Project Risk Management guideline written for Total in 2013. The structure was then incorporated into the existing Total E&P data management system.
- Initial dataset: kwantis analyzed and organized 1500 risks from 8 projects (Offshore Angola, Offshore and Onshore Nigeria, Offshore Congo, Myanmar, Kazakhstan).
- Analysis: kwantis then analyzed the consolidated data to draw lessons learned for future projects.
The outcome
The analysis gave useful information on topics such as:
- risk occurrences by project type
- risk evaluation heat maps
- risk mitigation plan efficiency
kwantis presented the results at the Annual Total E&P Risk Workshop in 2014.
